Summer Fun in Alaska
Contrary to common belief, Alaska does have summer, and it is what every summer camp aspires to be. Temperatures can range from 50 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and daylight can stretch for as long as 18 hours. For those wondering how to fill your days on an Alaskan summer vacation, here are a few ideas to get you inspired to travel to Alaska in 2021..
THE SUN (ALMOST) NEVER SETS...
Ah, summer. The sun is shining, the ocean waves are gently lapping onto the shores, the birds are chirping, the sounds of the forest stretch on for miles and miles over towering cliffs and mountains all the way up to the Arctic tundra. You didn’t think we were talking about the tropics, did you? Contrary to common belief, Alaska does have summer, and it is what every summer camp aspires to be. Temperatures (depending on where you’re visiting) can range from 50 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and daylight can stretch for as long as 18 hours. That’s a day-and-a-half for those of us accustomed to life closer to the equator. This influx of daytime proves perfect for summer vacations: longer days translate directly into more time for fun in the sun— especially so with the adventures that call the Last Frontier home. For those wondering how to fill your days on an Alaskan summer vacation, here are a few ideas to get you inspired.
TAKE A FLIGHT ON THE WILD SIDE The port town of Icy Strait Point may seem like it has all the trappings of a quintessential summer vacation spot, and you’re not wrong. Quaint, friendly, right on the water and offering up a host of fishing trips and fresh crab that could rival any established beach town, Icy Strait Point holds its own as a summer hub. But, the real draw here isn’t out on the water; it’s inland. Take an ATV expedition up Chichagof Island’s dirt paths less traveled for a scenic summer drive infused with the spirit of a roller coaster. At the peak of your joyride, you’ll find yourself staring down the cable of the world’s longest zip line—and that’s where the adrenaline really kicks in. Strapped into your harness, you’ll plummet down the mountainside, over the forest canopy at speeds of 65 miles per hour. Somewhere, midflight and enjoying a birds-eye view of the waterfront far below, you might reflect that this is a far better experience than building a sandcastle.
MEET SOME (FIERCE) LOCALS If the Icy Strait Point’s zipline inspired you to learn more about flight, then you’ll certainly revel at the chance to come face to face with some of Alaska’s birds of prey. The Alaska Raptor Center in Sitka makes for a surreal experience, feeling more like “Jurassic Park” than city zoo—perfect for a field trip out of the ordinary. For starters, this part-hospital, part-education center offers as good of a look as you can hope to have at an authentic bird of prey without shimmying up a tree to watch their nest. The Flight Training Center sports a soundproof viewing walkway comprised of one-way glass, so hawks and eagles are entirely unperturbed by your gawking. Pair this uncanny observation with the litany of in-depth lessons provided by the center’s professional staff and you’ve got the makings for a fresh set of eyes anytime you might glimpse a shadow far up in the sky. Testing your new-fangled knowledge with a hike through the adjacent 17- acre forest is only fitting, and an undeniably fun foray into the Alaskan wilderness.
GET WET & WILD ON NATURE’S WATER RIDE Whale-watching may be a well-established source of marvel, but the whales aren’t the biggest sight to be had in the Last Frontier—that prestige is held by glaciers. Massive behemoths of ancient ice, glaciers consume your view of the horizon in such a way that begs to be witnessed. But, none might have quite the photogenic appeal as the Mendenhall Glacier. Sure, you barely have to leave Juneau to get a look at it— but what if you experienced it? Where there’s a glacier, there’s bound to be melting ice and subsequent runoff. The Mendenhall Glacier certainly upholds this theory: Just look at the Mendenhall River. Here is where you should look to turn your glacier-viewing into a proper adventure. Set sail on a white-water raft for up-close and breathtaking views you could never find at a visitor center, and then enjoy a five-mile float down the river with equally enchanting views of the wild—and the odd Class 3 whitewater sprinkled in, just to add some spice to the trip downriver. Summed up, it perfectly encapsulates any day in Alaska: beautiful and otherworldly, with a thrill seemingly right around every corner.

Wolf, Moose, Caribou, Eagles, Whales and Bear!
" Our trip was excellent. The room, with the upgrades, was amazing! We saw many eagles (bald and golden), one bear, many whales, including one breach, seals, one bear, one wolf, moose and caribou, and many smaller animals.. If we travelled during salmon run, we probably would have seen more bear and eagles. The scenery is to die for, the vistas spectacular. The ship was great; service, food, etc were all great. Thanks for everything."
